Spicy vs. Bland

Question:
What do Birds prefer, spicy seads or bland seads?

My Hypothesis:

I think that the Birds will prefer the spicy seeds because they have flavor.

Variables:

Independent Variable:
My independent variable is how spicy the Bird seeds are.

Depend Variable:

my dependent variable is the amount of seeds that were eaten at the end of 4 days.

Controlled variable:

The controlled variable is the height and general position of the Bird feeders.

Materials:

two clear 2 liter soda bottles with caps.
a drill with different size drill bits
black string
wild bird seeds
tabasco brand chili sauce
ground cyanne pepper
ground chili powder

Procedure

making the bird feeder:

1- empty two, two liter soda bottles.
2- rinse and let dry and take labels off.
3- drill two holes directly across from each other in the bottles with a 27/64 ths drill bit.
4- put a pice of bamboo the same size as the holes through the bottle.
5- then directly above the holes, cut a dome shapes about 4 cm. across and about 5 cm. tall.
6- cover with tape and poke holes in it.
7- take the two bottle caps and drill a hole in each cap in the center with a 11/64 ths drill bit.
8- take a pice of string about one arms length and fold it in half and tie a knot on the inside that will not come out of the hole when it is hung up.

making the bird food

1- measure out 600 ml of standard wild bird seed.
2- measure out six teaspoons of chili powder and mix it into the seeds.
3- also measure 1 1/2 tablespoons of tabasco brand chili sauce and mix it into the seed well so that the

measuring data:

before you set your bird feeders out make a line with sharpie where the bird food comes up to on your bird feeder. set your bird feeders out in a clear spot but where there are some trees around, and wait for the birds to come. every day make a new line underneath the previous line every day and then measure in centimeters how much bird food was eaten each day.

Conclusion/ Discussion

Concluding from my observations i think that since we do not put bird food out on a regular basis that, that was a very important variable that was not taken into consideration. Also when the few birds that finally found the bird food that i put out did come to eat food from my bird feeders our cats scared them off and watched the bird feeders until all the birds left out of terror of being the food. i think that these are variables that were not taken into consideration when i planed this experiment. Do not believe that the birds in my back yard like the food i had put out for them. i think that if they had enjoyed the food that the results would have been better. i also think that the spicy food was maybe too spicy, because 3 cm of bird seed was eaten out of the bird feeder that was not spicy compared to the 1 cm of bird food that was eaten out of the bird feeder that had the spicy bird food in it. i think that it was too spicy for two reasons 1, there was not much bird seed eaten from the bird feeder and 2, when i was making the bird seed i put so much bird seed into it that it smelled like it could kill you. so i think this is why the birds didn't eat my bird food.
If I were to do this experiment again i would put less spicy stuff in it, put it in a more protected area, and leave it out for longer.
